What do the polls say?
Canada is the only country in the developed world with no legal limits on abortion throughout all 9 months of pregnancy and yet, for almost a decade,
6 in 10 Canadians
believe human life should be protected before birth.

In 2001, Alliance for Life Ontario commissioned a poll in which respondents were read information about unplanned pregnancies and abortions. For each item read, respondents were asked to state if the information read to them made them more likely to support or oppose abortion. Besides wanting protection for pre-born children, a majority of Canadians (65%) favour informed consent legislation on abortion and 70% of Canadians oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion on demand.

Canadians are Uninformed
In January 2010, Angus Reid found that most Canadians are misinformed about the legal status of abortion. Results indicated that four-in-five Canadians (80%) are unaware of the current legal status of abortion in the country: women being able to have an abortion at any time during their pregnancy, with no legal restrictions whatsoever.
A significant proportion of respondents (43%) wrongly assume that an abortion can only be performed in the first trimester of pregnancy.
The poll also found that just one-in-four Canadian women (26%) endorse the current legal status, and two-thirds call for different approaches to regulate abortion in Canada.
Four-in-five Canadians (79%) back an initiative that would make it mandatory for health care workers to offer information to pregnant women about alternatives to abortion.
Establishing the personhood of the unborn does not mean we are ignoring the personhood of the mother. |
